I think it’s actually really important that the morality of Kaiji never says that what is happening to him is ok because his normal state is to be a weak idiot who does what other people tell him to do without thinking critically about it because it’s easier to just be lead.  You find that vein of morality a lot in American works, where the weak and stupid deserve to be fleeced, and while the villains of Kaiji certainly work that angle, I don’t think FKMT means for us to agree with them.  Certainly Gai’s impassioned speech about how a life that seems rotten and worthless can be beautiful and meaningful to someone who has nothing agrees with that interpretation.  And I think that’s a really beautiful sentiment.
